About this test

The Uric Acid – Serum test measures uric acid levels in the blood to assess metabolism and diagnose gout and related conditions.

The Uric Acid – Serum test is a blood test used to measure the level of uric acid, a waste product formed from the breakdown of purines in the body.

Uric acid is normally filtered by the kidneys and excreted in urine. Elevated levels (hyperuricemia) can lead to crystal formation in joints, causing gout, or in the kidneys, leading to kidney stones. Low levels may be associated with certain metabolic or liver conditions.

This test is commonly used to diagnose and monitor gout, evaluate kidney function, and assess metabolic disorders. It may also be used to monitor patients undergoing chemotherapy, as rapid cell breakdown can increase uric acid levels.

The purpose of this test is to

  • To measure uric acid levels in blood
  • To diagnose and monitor gout
  • To assess kidney function
  • To evaluate metabolic disorders
  • To monitor treatment effectiveness
