About this test
The SGOT/AST test measures aspartate aminotransferase levels in the blood to assess liver health and detect tissue damage.

The SGOT / AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) test is a blood test used to measure the level of AST, an enzyme found in the liver, heart, muscles, and other tissues. When these tissues are damaged, AST is released into the bloodstream.

Elevated AST levels may indicate liver diseases such as hepatitis, liver injury, or cirrhosis. It may also rise in conditions affecting the heart or muscles, such as heart attack or muscle injury.

The purpose of this test is to

  • To measure AST enzyme levels in the blood
  • To assess liver function
  • To detect liver or tissue damage
  • To help diagnose liver diseases
  • To monitor ongoing liver conditions
